The Woodfin Suites opposes Measure C
During the 2005 election, Emeryville hotel managers and business associations poured money into the "Committee to Keep Tax Dollars in Emeryville," formed to oppose Measure C. The committee raised $115,610, an astonishing sum for a small-town election in which only 1,812 votes were cast, amounting to over $63 per voter. Nearly all these funds came from the hotels and the Chamber of Commerce. De Davies, at the time the General Manager of the Woodfin, served as the group's treasurer.
The Woodfin Suites sues the City of Emeryville
As soon as Measure C was approved, the Woodfin and Sheraton hotels filed suit against the city and sought an injunction to stop it from going into effect. Their brief argued that they were already in compliance with Measure C's wage standards. They also stated that implementing the ordinance would cause them "irreparable damages."
Although the Woodfin's initial lawsuit to repeal Measure C was overturned by a federal judge, the hotel is again sueing the city.

 | The Woodfin Suites fired Eduardo Martinez for trying to organize his co-workers. Here's his story...
|
I work to support my wife and my four-year-old son. I found work as a houseman at the Woodfin Hotel.
When my manager found out that I had given EBASE contact information for my co-workers, he started yelling at me, telling me I was guilty of a serious crime and I could go to jail. He sent me home before the end of my shift, and another manager called later to tell me I could never come back to work.
Later on, I heard from my friends that the managers were using me as an example, threatening to fire anyone else who gave EBASE a worker's contact information.
I decided to fight to get my job back because I think it's wrong that I was fired just for helping my co-workers learn about their legal rights, and because I still hope that we can work together to enforce Measure C and make the Woodfin a place where all workers are treated with respect.
